Playing Strands

Accessing the Game

Strands is available on the New York Times website and within the NYT Games app. The game presents a grid of letters accompanied by a theme clue, such as “Playing dirty,” guiding players to uncover words related to the theme.

Gameplay Mechanics

Strands combines elements of a crossword and word search. The primary objective is to identify the “spangram,” a word or phrase that encapsulates the puzzle’s theme and spans the entire board, either horizontally or vertically. The spangram is highlighted in yellow when found, often simplifying the discovery of remaining words.

Words may be formed in any direction—up, down, left, right, or diagonal—using each letter only once. Theme words, highlighted in blue when identified, align with the puzzle’s theme. Only one correct solution exists per puzzle.

If players struggle, they can submit non-theme words of four or more letters to earn hint credits. Submitting three non-theme words activates the “Hint” button, which highlights the letters of a theme word. Players must still connect these letters in the correct order. Additional hints before solving a highlighted word reveal its letter sequence.

Winning the Game

Strands has no failure condition. Submitted guesses are either correct (identifying a theme word or spangram), contribute to hint credits, or are rejected (indicated by a shaking animation if invalid or too short). There are no limits on guesses or time.

Victory is achieved when all letters on the board are used, indicating the spangram and all theme words have been found. Upon completion, a shareable card displays the player’s performance: blue dots (🔵) for theme words, a yellow dot (🟡) for the spangram, and a lightbulb (💡) for words solved with hints.
