The PS5 Slim started shipping in November 2023 and serves as a direct replacement for the original PS5. While the core specifications remain unchanged, including CPU, GPU, and gaming performance, the new models come with several notable improvements in design and usability.
Refined Design and Improved Portability
One of the most significant changes in the PS5 Slim is its physical footprint. It is approximately 30% smaller in volume and 18% lighter compared to the original console. This streamlined design makes it more manageable for compact gaming setups.
The front panel now includes two USB-C ports, replacing one of the USB-A ports from the previous model. The placement of the power and eject buttons has also been revised, minimizing the risk of accidental presses during use.
Modular Shell and Upgradeable Disc Drive
A major innovation in the PS5 Slim design is its modular shell. The new vertical split design allows users to remove and replace panels with ease. This also enables a unique feature: users who purchase the Digital Edition can later buy and attach a Blu-Ray disc drive, an upgrade that was not possible with the original models.

Updated Storage and Game Bundles
The PS5 Slim introduces a meaningful upgrade in internal storage. All Slim models come with a full 1TB SSD, compared to the 825GB SSD found in earlier units. This addresses one of the primary concerns among gamers regarding limited space for modern game files.
At launch, Sony bundled the PS5 Slim with major titles like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 or Spider-Man 2. The standard Disc Edition of the PS5 Slim retails for $499, often including one of these high-profile games at no extra cost. The new Digital Edition is priced at $449.99, marking a $50 increase over its predecessor.
